Which M18 battery does your tool actually need?
Four M18 battery lines, and the number on the pack tells you almost nothing about which one belongs on the tool in your hand. Here is what separates them, which charger stops holding you up, and how to read the trim levels on the tools themselves.
The four M18 battery lines, decoded
Milwaukee sells four M18 battery lines and the names do a poor job of explaining the difference. The amp-hour figure tells you how long a pack runs. The line tells you how hard it can work.
REDLITHIUM CP is the compact pack and the lightest M18 made. It belongs on drills, drivers, work lights and radios — anything held overhead, where the weight you are not carrying matters more than the runtime you are giving up. It drains quickly on anything that bogs down.
REDLITHIUM XC is extended capacity and it is the default. Most tools, most of the time. It is noticeably heavier than a CP pack, and it is the one most people should own two of rather than owning a single larger pack.
HIGH OUTPUT uses cells that push more current and run cooler. That is the pack for grinders, circular saws, reciprocating saws and impact wrenches — tools that pull hard enough to make a standard pack sag. On a drill you would never notice the difference.
FORGE uses tabless cells, which deliver more current still and recharge faster than anything else in the range. It is the most expensive way to buy amp hours, so it makes sense once you own a tool that genuinely asks for it, and not before.
All four fit every M18 tool and every M18 charger. The interface has never changed. What changes is the current the pack can deliver, how fast it recovers, and what it weighs on the end of your arm.
Match the battery to the tool, not to the price
The mistake we see most is buying capacity when the problem is current. A large pack built from low-current cells still sags on a grinder, and a tool that sags runs hot — which is what shortens cell life.
Low-draw tools
Drills, impact drivers, work lights, tyre inflators, grease guns. A compact pack keeps the tool short and balanced. An extended-capacity 5.0Ah pack is the sensible all-rounder if you only want to own one size.
High-draw tools
Angle grinders, circular and track saws, reciprocating saws, rotary hammers, right-angle drills and high-torque impact wrenches. This is where HIGH OUTPUT and FORGE earn their price — not in runtime, but in holding voltage under load and staying cooler while they do it.
If you are buying one pack
Buy an extended-capacity 5.0Ah. It runs every M18 tool acceptably, it is the size most kits ship with, and it is the pack you will still be using long after the tool it came with has gone.
M18 chargers, and why yours might be the bottleneck
Every M18 pack fits every M18 charger, which is why people assume charging is a solved problem. It is not. The charger sets the ceiling, and a fast pack on a slow charger is simply a slow pack.
- Standard chargers bring a pack back at a fixed, modest rate. Fine overnight, painful mid-job.
- Rapid chargers push more current into the same pack and shorten the wait between packs.
- Multi-bay sequential chargers work through a row of packs one at a time, so the whole rack is ready by morning off a single outlet.
- FORGE-rated chargers are the only way to see FORGE charge speeds. Put a FORGE pack on an older charger and nothing breaks — it simply charges at the old charger's rate, and you have paid for speed you are not getting.
If you run more than three packs, a multi-bay charger stops being a luxury. If you have just bought a FORGE pack and your charger is a decade old, the charger is the thing to replace next.
Running mains power and USB from an M18 pack
An M18 pack is a useful power source away from an outlet, and there are three separate ways to tap it.
Inverters clip onto a pack and give you household sockets. The one thing worth understanding before buying is the waveform: a pure sine wave inverter produces cleaner power and is the safer choice for anything with sensitive electronics, a motor or a medical device. Modified sine units are fine for simple resistive loads such as a filament lamp or a soldering iron.
The TOP-OFF does two jobs in one housing — it charges an M18 pack, and it turns one into a portable supply with a socket and USB ports. If you want one device for the van rather than a charger plus an inverter, that is the argument for it.
USB adapters are the small version of the same idea: a pack becomes a phone charger, and a large pack will do that for a very long time.
Two practical notes. Anything that draws real current will empty a pack far faster than a tool does, and inverters get hot, so keep them clear of a bag or a closed box.
Reading the trim levels on M18 grinders and impact wrenches
Two families here have more variants than anything else, and the differences are in the handling rather than the badge.
On grinders, the first choice is the switch. A paddle switch releases the moment you let go, which is what most site safety policies want; a slide switch with lock-on suits long, continuous cutting where holding a paddle all day is tiring. The second choice is braking: a braking grinder stops the wheel quickly after you release, and it is the version to have if you set the tool down before the wheel has run out. Variable speed matters if you use flap discs and wire wheels as well as cutting discs.
On impact wrenches, size is the real decision. Compact wrenches get into engine bays and racking. Mid-torque covers most vehicle and structural fixings without wearing your wrist out. High-torque D-handle tools are for seized and heavily torqued fixings, and they need two hands and a high-current pack.
Then the anvil. A friction ring lets you swap sockets fast; a pin detent locks the socket positively, which is what you want overhead or under a vehicle where a dropped socket is a real nuisance.

Are M18 and M18 FUEL batteries interchangeable?
Yes, because there is no such thing as an M18 FUEL battery. FUEL describes the tool — a brushless motor with REDLINK electronics inside it — not the pack. Every M18 pack ever made runs every M18 tool, FUEL or standard, and charges on every M18 charger.
Do all M18 batteries fit all M18 tools?
Yes. CP, XC, HIGH OUTPUT and FORGE all fit every M18 tool and every M18 charger, because Milwaukee has never changed the M18 interface. The only real limits are physical: the largest HD and FORGE packs add serious bulk and weight, which you feel on a tool held overhead or worked in a tight bay.
What do CP, XC and HD mean on an M18 battery?
CP is Compact, XC is Extended Capacity and HD is High Demand — the physically largest packs. They describe size and capacity, using more cells as you go up. None of those letters tells you how much current a pack can deliver. That is set by the line: REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE.
Is a FORGE battery better than HIGH OUTPUT?
It is faster to recharge and delivers more current, because FORGE uses tabless cells. Whether that is better depends entirely on the tool. On a grinder, a high-torque wrench or a saw that you run continuously and need back quickly, it is a real gain. On a drill, a light or an inflator, you are paying for headroom the tool will never ask for.
Can you charge a FORGE battery on a regular M18 charger?
Yes. It fits and it charges normally — nothing is harmed and no adapter is needed. What you do not get is the fast recharge FORGE is built for. On an older charger the pack simply charges at that charger's rate, so if quick turnaround is why you bought FORGE, the charger has to match.
Does a bigger Ah battery make a tool more powerful?
Not directly. Amp hours are a fuel-tank measurement: they set how long a tool runs, not how hard it pulls. What lifts real performance is the pack's ability to deliver current without voltage sagging, and that comes from the cells — which is exactly what separates HIGH OUTPUT and FORGE from standard REDLITHIUM. A high-current pack often feels stronger on a demanding tool because the tool is no longer being starved.
Why does my M18 battery only charge to two bars?
Start with temperature: a pack that is warm when it goes on will often stop short and finish later once it has cooled. If it repeats when the pack is at room temperature, one cell group is likely lagging behind the others, and leaving the pack on the charger for a few hours after the light goes green sometimes lets it balance out. A pack that has settled at part charge across several attempts, on more than one charger, has aged out.
How long does an M18 battery last on a charge?
There is no single figure, because runtime is set by how hard the tool pulls rather than by the pack alone. The same 5.0Ah battery that lasts a full day in a work light might last minutes of continuous cutting in a grinder. Use the amp-hour number to compare packs against each other, not to predict a working day, and judge a demanding tool by the pack's current capability instead.
What is the difference between an M18 inverter and the TOP-OFF?
An inverter does one job: it turns pack power into mains sockets. The TOP-OFF is a charger as well as a power supply, so the same unit refills an M18 pack and runs a socket and USB ports off one. If you already own a charger you are happy with, an inverter is the cheaper and lighter way to get an outlet. If you want to carry one thing, the TOP-OFF is the answer.
