DEWALT POWERSTACK DISCONTINUED? NO — IT'S NOW CALLED XR (HERE'S WHAT CHANGED)

DeWalt didn't kill the PowerStack — they rebranded it XR. Learn what changed, what didn't, and whether your 20V MAX accessories still work. (They do.)

DeWalt PowerStack Discontinued? No — It's Now Called XR (Here's What Changed)

DeWalt did not discontinue the PowerStack battery. DeWalt folded the PowerStack branding under the broader "20V MAX XR" umbrella, with the transition occurring around 2023–2024. The pouch-cell batteries are still in production — they just ship with updated packaging. The terminal, voltage, and physical footprint are unchanged. Every 20V MAX tool, charger, and accessory that worked with a PowerStack before still works now. If a listing said "discontinued," it was almost certainly one specific SKU (usually an older Ah size) being phased out — not the technology getting killed.

What Is the DeWalt PowerStack Battery?

Pouch cells vs. cylindrical cells — the real difference

Standard 20V MAX batteries use cylindrical lithium-ion cells — the same round format you'd find in a laptop. The PowerStack uses pouch cells: flat, stacked electrode layers sealed in a flexible foil housing. Pouch cells pack more active material into a smaller volume, which is why compact PowerStack packs run noticeably lighter and thinner than cylindrical equivalents at the same Ah rating.

DeWalt claims two real-world advantages: faster charge times and better capacity retention in cold weather. DeWalt's own spec sheets describe improved cold-weather performance relative to standard cylindrical packs — those claims align with how pouch-cell chemistry generally behaves, though results will vary by conditions and use case.

Which PowerStack SKUs were sold?

At launch, DeWalt offered PowerStack in a 1Ah compact and 2Ah configuration. A 5Ah pouch-cell pack followed later. The active SKU lineup has shifted as the line was absorbed into XR branding — some Ah sizes have been phased out while others remain available. Check DeWalt's site for currently active SKUs before assuming a specific pack is still orderable.

Why Did DeWalt Rename PowerStack to XR?

Short answer: brand consolidation.

"XR" is DeWalt's label for premium, high-performance batteries — as opposed to "ATOMIC," which covers the compact, lightweight end of the lineup. (See our breakdown of battery tiers for how the categories sort out.) The PowerStack packs were always XR-performance-tier batteries; they just happened to carry a separate marketing name that highlighted the cell technology. Having two names for one performance tier confused shoppers, so DeWalt folded PowerStack under the XR umbrella.

Nothing in the battery changed. Same pouch-cell pack, different label on the shrink wrap.

What Actually Changed Between PowerStack and the "New" XR Pouch-Cell Packs?

Element Changed? Notes
Battery terminal / port No Standard 20V MAX terminal — unchanged
Voltage No 20V MAX nominal throughout
Cell chemistry No Still pouch-cell in XR pouch-cell packs
Physical footprint No Same form factor: 4.1 in × 2.5 in × 1.7 in (compact)
Communication chip / firmware No confirmed change No documented revision to internal communication hardware between the PowerStack and XR-labeled versions
Packaging / label Yes "PowerStack" name dropped; now sold as 20V MAX XR
MSRP Check current listings Pricing has shifted with the rebranding; compare current retail prices against the DCB203 cylindrical equivalent before buying

The one real buyer risk: pouch-cell XR packs typically carry a noticeable price premium over cylindrical 20V MAX XR packs at the same Ah rating. Whether that premium is worth it depends on how you work — more on that below.

Does Your PowerStack Battery Work With All 20V MAX Tools and Accessories?

Yes. The 20V MAX port is universal across DeWalt's platform. PowerStack batteries slot into the same tool bay as any other 20V MAX pack and communicate the same way. DEWALT POWERSTACK batteries are compatible with all DEWALT 20V MAX chargers — including the DCB112, DCB115, DCB1102, DCB1104, and DCB118 — so no special dedicated charger is required.

That compatibility extends to third-party 20V MAX accessories. The battery port and voltage are identical — so any accessory designed for the 20V MAX terminal works regardless of whether the pack says "PowerStack" or "XR" on the side.

PowerStack / XR Pouch-Cell vs. Standard Cylindrical 20V MAX XR: Which Should You Buy?

DeWalt 20V MAX XR 5.0Ah battery
XR Pouch-Cell (was PowerStack) Standard 20V MAX XR Cylindrical
Cold-weather performance Better (per DeWalt spec data) Standard
Charge speed Faster Standard
Size / weight Compact, lighter Bulkier at same Ah
Cost per Ah Higher Lower
Cycle-life data Limited long-term data Well-established
Tool / charger compatibility Full 20V MAX Full 20V MAX

Buy the pouch-cell pack if: you work outside in winter, need the fastest possible recharge between uses, or want the most compact pack for tight-clearance tools.

Buy a standard cylindrical XR if: cost per Ah matters more than charge speed, you're doing normal shop or garage work, or you want a proven format with years of documented cycle life behind it.

FAQ

Is the DeWalt PowerStack battery discontinued?

No. DeWalt rebranded the PowerStack line under the XR name around 2023–2024. The pouch-cell battery technology is still in production. Some older specific SKUs — certain Ah sizes — were phased out, but the product line continues.

What is the difference between DeWalt PowerStack and XR?

The PowerStack *is* an XR battery — a pouch-cell pack that sits in DeWalt's XR performance tier. DeWalt consolidated the "PowerStack" marketing name under "XR" branding. Battery terminals, voltage, and compatibility are unchanged.

Is DeWalt PowerStack worth it?

For cold-weather work or when charge speed matters, yes — pouch cells charge faster and hold capacity better in cold. For standard shop or garage use, a standard 20V MAX XR cylindrical pack costs less per Ah and the real-world difference is minor for most tasks.

Are DeWalt PowerStack batteries compatible with all 20V MAX tools?

Yes. PowerStack uses the standard 20V MAX terminal and is compatible with all 20V MAX tools, chargers, and accessories — including third-party USB adapters and inverters designed for the 20V MAX platform.

Why did DeWalt discontinue the PowerStack name?

Brand consolidation. "XR" is DeWalt's premium battery umbrella, and having a separate "PowerStack" label for one cell type within that tier created shopper confusion. Folding it under XR simplified the lineup.

What replaced DeWalt PowerStack?

Nothing replaced it — the pouch-cell packs still exist, now labeled as part of the XR line. If a specific Ah size was discontinued, a different Ah XR pouch-cell pack is typically still available.

Do DeWalt PowerStack batteries work with older DCB chargers?

Yes — DEWALT POWERSTACK batteries are compatible with all DEWALT 20V MAX chargers, including the DCB112, DCB115, DCB1102, DCB1104, and DCB118. No special dedicated charger is required.

Whatever the label says on the side of your battery, it still plugs into every 20V MAX tool and accessory on your shelf. If you want to pull phone-charging or small-appliance power out of those packs on the job, check out our DeWalt-compatible USB-C fast charger and portable power inverter — both work with the old PowerStack packs and the new XR-labeled ones.
