Mark them with tape before you touch a drill.

1. Position the plate. Set the base PACKOUT unit where you want it, slide the mounting plate underneath, and find your bolt locations. Each anchor point needs to land on or straddle a floor rib — not open sheet metal. 2. Mark and punch. Remove the PACKOUT unit. Center-punch each hole location. This keeps your drill bit from walking on a steel floor. 3. Drill through the floor. Use cutting oil on steel — it extends bit life and controls heat. Drill slowly and let the bit do the work. 4. Deburr every hole. File down raw metal edges before installing anything. Skip this and you'll corrode from the cut edge outward inside of two winters. 5. Install the backing plate. From underneath the van, slide a steel backing plate over the bolts before you thread on the nuts — size it generously so it distributes load well beyond the bolt hole. This backing plate is what spreads the load across the floor structure. A bolt pulling through a hole in sheet metal with nothing behind it is just a matter of time. Don't skip this step. 6. Torque down with nyloc nuts or thread-locking compound. A loaded PACKOUT stack can hit 150–200 lbs combined. Hardware that works loose will. 7. Engage the PACKOUT. Lower the base unit onto the plate, engage the lock points, and confirm no movement in any direction.

What You Lose — and Why That's Fine for a Dedicated Van

Flexibility. That plate location is committed. Reconfiguring means new holes. For a van that carries nothing except tools, that's irrelevant — pick the right spot, do it once, done.

It bolts to the floor through its web, distributing load along the track's length rather than concentrating it at single points. Standard L-track bolt-hole spacing varies by manufacturer, so check your specific track's spec sheet before planning your anchor layout. Most van builders run two parallel tracks across the cargo floor width, spaced to match the PACKOUT footprint.

The rule that matters: L-track anchor bolts must hit floor ribs or load-rated anchor points — not the sheet metal skin between ribs. Track bolted to unsupported skin will pull up under a hard stop with a loaded stack.

How Manta Mount Cleats Interface With the PACKOUT System

1. Determine track placement. Measure your PACKOUT base unit footprint — the large toolbox (48-22-8420) measures 19" L × 24" W. Run two tracks at that width plus 1–2" for cleat engagement on both sides. 2. Mark rib locations. Mallet method. Tape every rib within your track run. Every anchor bolt must hit a rib. 3. Cut track to length if needed. Hacksaw or angle grinder with a cutting disc. Deburr the cut end. 4. Position and mark bolt holes. Hold the track in place, mark through the pre-drilled web holes. Only mark locations that fall on ribs. 5. Drill and bolt. Flat washers and nyloc nuts on the underside. Torque to hardware spec. 6. Set the cleats in the track. Spacing should match the PACKOUT rail slots on your base unit. The 6-pack gives you enough for a full base unit with redundancy. 7. Engage and load-test. Put weight in the stack and pull hard in every direction. Zero movement means the install is right. Any flex: check that cleats are fully locked and that the track isn't moving at its anchor points.

When uncertain, consult the van racking manufacturer's spec for your model.

Stack clearance check before you commit: Measure your interior height. A standard-roof Transit has less headroom than it looks.
